Went a little overboard :) - PRW-3100 review and comparison

    Hi guys,
since I liked the STN-display of my new PRW-3510Y so much, I got a PRW-3100 too, just a few days later.
    Here's a litte unboxing:

This one came in the correct box, but it was bought from a professional seller.
However the Worldtime-Mode said "ROM", normally it's set to UTC so I’m pretty certain this one was sold and sent back. Rest of the watch is flawless however, so I don’t care too much. Still not really a nice move from a professional seller to advertise a watch as new, when somebody already fiddled with it.

This shot shows how crisp the display really is.

For those who missed my review of the PRW-3510Y. The PRW-3100 also has the new STN-display.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super-...ematic_display
Interesting to know that this type of display was invented in ’83. So I'm not sure if any older Casios already had it and if this is just an updated version of an already existing STN-display or if they haven't been used so far.
Interestingly enough this one has a different module number from the PRW-3000 (3414) - the PRW-3100 has module number 3444. They do have exactly the same functions but I guess they gave it a new module number just because of the new display.
The strap is nice and soft but not as soft as the one from the PRW-3510Y. The brushed steel bezel makes the watch look a little bigger than the 3000 even though they are exactly the same size. The only difference is that the bezel of the 3100 is flat while the one on the 3000 is slightly angled towards the crystal.
more in the next post - can only attach 10 pics.

And some more pics with the PRW-3510Y:

The PRW-3510Y is of course bigger - I had some comparison shots in the other thread. Case is similar to the PRW-2500.
Compared to the PRW-3100 the 3510Y is more "toolish" and chunkier but almost the same height even though it doesn't look that way. The buttons on the 3100 are steel btw and plastic on the 3510Y. The 3510Y is quite a bit heavier. The bezel doesn't turn on the 3100 of course. The strap screws on the 3100 are rattling a bit while they don't on the 3510Y.
All in all I can't really say which one I like more - one of the reasons I got both I guess . I like the chunky, almost aggressive design of the 3510Y but I also like the sleek and slightly "blingy" look of the 3100 with the brushed bezel.
And I have to say once again - I really love that display!!
I like how Casio gradually improves their models and how they don't try to re-invent the wheel with a new model. Seems like a solid strategy for long-term success me thinks. And these new models - the PRW-3510Y and PRW-3100 made me love the Protrek-line even more. I have to say I wear my Protreks more than my Gs.
For anybody still uncertain - get one - you won't regret it, believe me! Which one of the two doesn't really matter. They're both great.

Thanks for the extra info Sedi.

After looking at the side by side photos I think I like the 3510 better. Probably because it does look more rugged and G like.

Thanks Iyonk! Yes the display is an improvement, not so much the contrast but mainly the viewing angle like on the pic.

Thanks, Tom . A little update after owning both for some time. I find myself wearing the PRW-3100 much more than the 3510. The smaller size is a pro. The strap on the 3510 is softer but in combination with the wings it does pull some armhair every now and then. A Nato/Zulu would change that but so far I shy away from modding a new and expensive watch. I did put a Zulu strap on my PRW-2500 however and it became my favorite Protrek at the moment. But since it was used and already has some scratches, the mod was no biggie.
    Cheers, Sedi
