Steinhart vs Debaufre, what's the story?

So I have always liked Steinhart. I knew for a period they in a sense were Debaufre. What is the story behind that. Does anyone know what happened? I do have this rare Triton incoming tomorrow which is why I'm curious.

Thanks a bunch. Makes sense as I've often heard of both being one in the same as I know Debaufre is no longer. Yeah I'm thinking this one to be kind of a rare piece as I've been a Triton fan for years but was my first time seeing the Triton with a 3 o'clock crown.

Well thank you. That was interesting. I wonder how they were able to transition back into Steinhart after that ordeal but I see they have nicely. So in fact Debaufre has been Steinhart all along and not anyone else at all. So in fact my like new but under their lawsuit forced name Steinhart arrives tomorrow. Thank you for clearing that up my friend.

yeah it got a bit confusing on the thread from memory and I remember some one link to that press release which to me seemed to make the most sense .. I'm sure one of the guys probably will have the full story and can condense it down to a few paragraphs remember it being a big thing a few years back but my memory shocking at times on the details but stienhart is the better know name for sure

Yes indeed. I've been a Steinhart fan for years. I think what I'll end up doing is selling this rare piece and grabbing the current model Triton.

Excellent info, Ismy! I'm curious what change allowed them to go back to the original name without fear of litigation.

Edit: a little digging has provided part of the answer. Steinhart USA and Steinhart GmbH are/were not the same.

Steinhart USA, later to become Debaufre, later went out of business, leaving only Steinhart GmbH remaining. Reading between the lines, it appears that the threat of litigation came from Steinhart GmbH.
