Thread: Adventures in case-making.

  1. #51
So the titanium caseback in 50um showed up from one supplier, and I just got a shipping notification from the other supplier for the 3 main titanium cases.

So far the 50um finish is... rough.

The back they turned on a lathe to clean up the support structure.

Some comparisons between plastic filament I did myself, a cast sterling silver piece with the wax printed at 32um (it is also blasted and tumbled when they removed the casting investment), and the direct sintered titanium (the other supplier is direct melted).

Next step is to try some automatic deburring tumbling:
    Fast cut ceramic:

To be followed by pre-plate plastic pyramids:

I'll wait for the top case at 20um to arrive to compare base finishes before tumbling them.

Quick sanding to brighten the high spots, old Longines movement and dial fit in. Feels good.

Need to buy some new barrels for the tumbler before I can try to semi-automate the unpleasant polishing needed.

Cool. I've seen rougher cases on production out of china.

    What's your end game?

Endgame is... fluid. There's the making a watch part which will happen. Slowly. Once I have the case-making sorted (still some significant changes are needed), it will be on to the dial, then hands, maybe a custom deployant. Next will be movement decoration. From there I will have a better idea of timing and pricing it takes and whether it's worth pursuing as a commercial venture.

Right now it's not looking good.

If you sell em at £20k a piece you should be fine.

Ha. I'll need to pull a Romain Jerome and find a piece of the Holy Grail to glue onto the rotor if I want to get that level of price: quality ratio.

Geoff didn't mention quality. Focus on price, like everybody else does.

.. or include a few bristles from Hokusai’s brush pen, a corner torn off the Turin shroud, or fill the case with Japanese seawater (the actual Great Wave) a la Sinn

Come on, you’re not even trying here
It's the final countdown! PM me before they're all gone!
