I'm pretty certain that Pieter Doensen is wrong.
The original Roamer microquartz might, in '72, arguably have been the first slightly affordable quartz watch, but I've got one somewhere and it's got a really weird kind of stepper escapement which has a stupidly loud tick. Solid state it ain't.
There's also a Roamer microquartz digital which is nice and early but this solid state version used a dynamic scattering (DMS) LCD with its own bespoke micro-transformer to get a high enough voltage to get the scattering effect in the substrate. In '72, DMS tech was absolutely cutting edge and more expensive than the quartz it was displaying. Any watches using this tech were huge and not remotely cheap.
Eventually Roamer produced a cheaper model with what has become the standard Twisted Nematic (TN) display. but that was too late to be the first of anything.
That there are three very different watches with basically the same name makes it an easy mistake to make. However, one wasn't solid state, one wasn't early and one wasn't cheap.

Oh, OK.
I bought a Microquartz myself once, for a surprisingly low sum, and only then discovered it was a case of: 'I'm afraid that's just the name of the watch, sir'.

This was the most difficult round for me. The Timex is flat out cool and the price it was purchased for epitomizes everything this contest stands for.
The Certina has a nice movement but the case is what does it for me. It has such lovely curves.
In the end, I went to my stand by for making these votes: which one would I wear. Since I would wear both of them, I had to go for the one I would wear more often. And that would be the Certina.

I think I can see the writing on the wall and I can't think of a better watch to lose to! Mind you, the standard gets higher every time and this competition has to stand as the best antidote to the ever more complicated watch market. It proves again and again the anyone can buy interesting, wearable and even desirable watches for pocket money.
