    **** bulova accutron watch ****

not the one but similar style ..

I was looking at one to buy caught my eye when looking at joblots and the like so quartz right ? so they said was gain time or could be losing it but I thought with quartz watches they worked or they don't did not think they could lose/gain time ? so what do you think could be the cause of it,

More importantly is it an easy fix ..I was wondering if wrong battery fitted could it cause this ?

What knowledge do we have on them here I wonder ..

So what is your take on this ...

-temperature is a factor -on non compensated -however if there is maybe a battery run down the watch may miss an odd beat -more likely to lose time than gain i believe if thats happening more often than not those missed beats add up to a greater loss of course and a missed beat isnt something you would observe generally - problems with the quartz movement s are usually just solved with a replacement movement even on high end quartz -just a cheaper option- there is a misconception that a good quartz watch doesn't ever need a service but of course if the purchase is cheapish the service won't break the bank as opposed to the mechanical costs and you have a cool watch with some value
probably with a wrong battery it wouldn't work anyway btw the Accutron is a very good watch and a reputation for high accuracy

cool they said it had a new battery fitted but it had gain time ? I was not after this one necessarily just saw it and had in the back of my mind a whim to try one at some point this one needed some work too so might past on it did not mind doing the work as enjoy polishing and what not on vintage watches did not mind the battery swapping too ... but if underlining problems means got to put a new movement in then ..nah not feeling it that much ..

remember a g shock I fixed once the battery cost more then I had paid for it and once I got bored of it when flogging it I just got what the battery cost back so I was out of pocket on that one so not fancying doing that again

here's the pic and the info of the sale ...

Vintage bulova accutron in working order but gaining, replacement battery recommendation for the 218 was a rayovac 344 which I replaced. For the first six hours of running and wearing it kept perfect time but overnight gained so needs some attention but assume with the right know how could be sorted. There is a little discolouration on dial at four position that could be sorted easily if needed, bracelet will fit around an eight inch wrist and is in nice condition and attaches to watch head via two 10mm spring bars, watch is approx 34 mm including winder ,crystal has a few marks but this is consistent with age of watch.Problem with the gaining side might be down to battery not being exact one needed but my expertise with the accutron models is non existent. All above mentioned and photos form description and all I know, very expensive model when new I would think, any questions please ask. Will send insured and recorded if watch exceeds £60. Last two pictures show second hand movement.

Is that a quartz or a hummer. or even a quartz hummer?

Because there's a common problem with the hummers, modern batteries are a little too powerful and so cause the tuning fork to resonate more than it should, sometimes pushing the index wheel more than a single tooth. This can be continuous and very very obvious or it can be intermittent and affected by both position and movement. There are three fixes: the right battery, a battery conversion or actually adjusting the movement. The UK specialist is Silverhawk over on TZ-UK but there are a couple of others who can work on these.

Huh! You'd hope. First there was the accutron which was very much the Jewel in Bulova's crown, then there was the accutron quartz, then there was a plain old quartz called the accutron and then accutron just became a generic, and meaningless, name.

Sadly, I'm not even talking about the latest Citizen owned zombie incarnation, I'm talking from about 1975, which is pretty hard to distinguish.
