**** EMG is on the horizon****

EMG is on the horizon well it's here with their latest design the horizon chronograph mecca quartz where to start ok lets look at mecca quartz, not that mecca quarts are new but they seem to have come in to their own quite recently popping up in some great watches I have seen them on several brands of chronographs lets take a quick look at what is a mecca quartz ...

** Mecaquartz chronographs use movements of a hybrid construction. These movements join a quartz-regulated electronic timekeeping engine and a mechanical chronograph module. Mecaquartz chronographs have the accuracy and stability of quartz, the handling of a mechanical chronograph, and a physically compact package.

    Mecaquartz Construction
Quartz watches with an "analog" display use a small stepper motor to drive the watch hands. Mecaquartz movements use a second, separate stepper motor to drive the chronograph module. A gear-train translates the motor drive into movement of the chronograph hands.

The chronograph motor operates at a higher frequency than the one-tick-per-second of the timekeeping motor. This gives the chronograph a smoother sweep and allows the measurement of intervals with greater precision than full seconds. The reset lever operates on a heart-shaped cam so reset is mechanical and instantaneous.

By way of contrast, a conventional quartz chronograph uses separate motors to drive each counter on the dial. The hands are advanced by the circuitry when the chronograph is activated by the pusher. When the chronograph is reset the motors move their hands to zero. (Apparently the Seiko Sportura Kinetic Chronograph is an exception and also uses a mechanical system for an instantanous reset.)

Note: Mecaquartz chronographs should not be confused with a different type of mechanical-quartz pairing. There are quartz movements that use a rotor driven by wrist movement to power an electrical generator that charges the movement power source (battery or capacitor). Seiko calls this technology "Kinetic"; ETA calls their system "Autoquartz" (named "Omegamatic" by Omega and "SPARC" by Ventura). Confusingly, Festina calls their rotor-powered Miyota (Citizen) quartz movements "Mecaquartz".**

Now to the horizon where to start well I received the turquoise blue dial with the red hands, there are a few colour choices available one for most tastes as their was several I would have chosen from...

When speaking with one of the designers/owners chico, one of our fellow members as you know he was looking for something new but had a vintage look to it he took inspiration from the Heuer Monaco Calibre 12 that we all know and love but instead of making a copy he took the basic idea of shape of case really, and then ran with it and change it up so it has it own look, but still keep that vintage look that some ( alot ) feel appealing. I am loving the fresh turquoise dial and red hands the case shape the feel of the buttons quite solid but not overly so. yes liking it a lot, just one small thing with the Seiko Vk64 movement no running seconds just never realise I like to see the seconds tick by but apart from that am loving it ...

Now a couple of pros and cons ...

pros ... case shape even thou similar to the tag case it's not... there are subtle changes to it ( I'm sure chico will explain them for us as I remember chatting to him and then another member who thought it was just a tag a like and when chico went in to details there was lots of subtle changes to give it own stamp this is not a copy of anything it is it's own man ) .. ( they just had an inspiration in a design which gave them ideas on their own type of watch ) as we all know every watch will remind someone of another brand , it's the fine line between similar and just another copy and think they hit that line perfect .. As for marketing they can sell to those looking for some thing fresh and new.. and then also to those who will never get a Monaco, but as this has that vintage chrono feel of it but is all new too.. I would fall in to this group.

pros ... mecca - quartz the accuracy of quartz but the movement of mech special this come to the fore with the pushers, I like the feel of a mechanical chronograph the clicks and the sounds of it working ..where some quartzs I find the pusher actions lacking in some ways ...

pros the strap they have decide to run with is of good quality cool design rally ...

    cons...

cons .. no running seconds ...

cons... nice strap think if they had a sign buckle it would be a finishing touch ..

Their are probably both more pros/cons but these are my first thoughts..

    Now to some pics...

So yes think chico and the gang did well on this one It would make a fine entry in to most collections and for a great price too, yes it is growing on me the more I look at it... I might even suggest to them that once it's done it circuit of the mwc guys that I can take care of it and give it a home and maybe even a review of it after owning it a few months..

Also fellow member mikey from wristwatchreview took a look at this very watch here ....

    Thanks for the review, Ismy.

We're already used to some interesting models coming from EMG and this one is no different. Very nice, indeed!

I'm thinking the same! Not only because it's mesmerizing, I already have watches similar in color to the others.

Thanks for the write up mate

We're not that happy with the straps to be honest, trying to source some better samples.

This German made Fluco hunter rally is looking like a possible candidate

the quality of the strap is fair as I say but think the sign buckle is more of a factor to me as normal would swap the strap fairly quickly did with this one snap a couple of pics then on to a few natos .. so if you have a sign buckle any strap chosen by the buyer becomes your strap by adding the buckle on it
