So, we hadn't been skiing for a couple of years, and having the same days off this week, Pat and I headed upisland to Mt Washington. Heading NW out of Victoria at sunrise, we take the Malahat Drive, the only road out of the city. It climbs over some hilly terrain through the traditional territory of the Malahat people (a Nation of indigenous people who have inhabited this area for thousands of years) and summits at 345 meters above sea level. There are some really great scenic lookouts along the way, which Bob got to enjoy. Looking south back toward Victoria (behind the hills), and a classic west coast First Nations' totem:
A little farther along, a terrific lookout looking east over the north part of Greater Victoria, and Washington State in the background, and finally north toward mainland BC in the distance (hidden by cloud):
A pano from the lookout, at sunrise:
Next stop, getting our ski on.

Vancouver island is kind of a long skinny thing. Living at one end of it means driving a lot upisland to get to anywhere fun and interesting. Because the weather at the southern end where I live is mild, snow is infrequent at best, so there's no practical way to have a ski resort down here. Thus, it's a 3 hour drive north to the main ski resort on the island. It's an easy drive, passing through the towns of Duncan and Ladysmith, and bypassing the city of Nanaimo. Eventually we reach the turnoff, and head inland.
Mount Washington and Strathcona Provincial Park are two of the island's major outdoor wilderness adventure regions. The ski resort is quite large, and has many runs for all skills and ages. I'm an intermediate skier at best. Pat hit the tube park while I donned my skis and hit the green and blue runs. Bob came along.
Long gone are the rope tows, Poma lifts, and T-bars. Now they use the Magic Carpet; a long, enclosed conveyor-belt affair to get you up the hill, in conjunction with the usual chair lifts. Here, Bob and I are riding the carpet up to start our runs:
We were there two days. I skied 4 hours the first day, and 5 hours the second. Probably 35 good long runs, of which Bob enjoyed about half. Lots of variation in terrain and runs for Bob to experience:
Despite my advanced age and state of decrepitude, no crashes or wipeouts, and we both survived the ski trip intact.
Next up: Bob is going for a hike in the coastal rainforest, a final trip around town, and then he'll be ready for his next adventure in the hands of another IWLer.

Thanks! If this were a couple of months later in the year, Bob's adventures would be more oriented towards the beach life: kayaking, surfing, and so on. But we have it all here on the island for both winter and summer lovers, and given Bob's lack of water resistance, it probably worked out better for him this way. He got to join in the fun rather than watching it from the beach.

Good stuff Sherry. Thanks I know Bob's never been skiing in this life or the REAL life. I agree w/ Alan Bob's having the time of his life.
