I understand nothing about hockey, or any sport for that matter. But my wife is crazy about hockey, so here we are.

Oh well, at least they sell booze...

I also know nothing about hockey , have never even watch a full game on TV yet somehow this is my 5th year "coaching " and for the second year running have 2 teams in different age groups to look after.
The Canadian contingent take it very seriously- me not so much .
One set of parents give me and my fellow coach tips after each game - if it's so important to you that your son wins why don't you get of your backside and help !!

How does one become a coach in the game of hockey without knowledge of the sport?

I grew up on the ice and baseball diamond, and played baseball well into my forties. I still skate with a group of old fart lawyers, doctors, dentists, cops, firefighters etc.

When I was in high school, I coached mite age kids and then peewee ranks. It was expected of kids our age to coach the kids, and the results were more than impressive.
There was of course parents involved, but the little rink rats responded more positively to someone maybe 8-10 years older than they were.
Not everyone won a trophy either.

By being the dad of 4 players and not hiding when they asked for volunteers.
Apparently I am the perfect assistant coach as all the Canadian contingent had argued/ fallen out/ p'd each other off so I get 2 jobs.

I can now fit skates, change and tighten wheels, size helmets, find odd missing pads etc
    Tactics are another matter !

Edit : also shouting "just wack it " isn't very Canadian but amusing to some
