They are a huge, by Canadian standards, high end jeweler. They were founded in 1879 in Montreal and a family member is still the majority stockholder of the Birks/Mayors chain. Most major Canadian cities have at least one pretty nice early to mid-twentieth century building owned by Birks. For decades Birks was the Canadian importer of Eternas, assembling them and even selling Birks branded Eternas. Sherry used to own a Birks Eterna.
