Thread: Worst bang for your buck

    Worst bang for your buck

Seen a lot of best bang for your buck comments. Got to thinking about watches that just don't seem to merit their MSRPs.

What watch do you see but cannot understand how anyone would pay THAT for that.

Here's mine, the Skydweller. Don't get me wrong. I really like what Rolex did here. I like how they added annual calendar and a dual timezone complications to a completely new watch. I think their use of the bezel as a trigger for selecting what the crown will control is truly cool...especially for a conservative company like Rolex.

But it's a new model! No history, no passionate owners. And I really like Rolex now. Didn't always feel like that, but if I had what the type of money they want for the Skydweller , there would be a handful of watches I'd choose before it. And even if I was just considering Rolex, I'd much rather spend it on a President or maybe (in italics for emphasis) a Pepsi GMT.

PS: I would probably jump all over this if it was offered in SS at a somewhat reasonable price.

Some brands come to mind rather than models Tag Heuer, Panerai, Bell and Ross to name a few. Thats not flaming their product, I'd happily wear many of their watches but to me they do not offer great bang for the buck.
    Regards Cam

    Watches
Tudor Pelagos, Omega Speedmaster 3510.50, Oris 1965 Diver, Tissot Visodate, Junghans Max Bill Auto, Helson Blackbeard, Seiko PADI Turtle, Tag Heuer F1

Agree with B&R and Tag Heuer to some extent. Panerai is not everyone's cup of tea and many are definitely turned off by the use of off the shelf 3rd party movements, but they do appear to hold their value pretty well.

The markup for gold. Few grand worth of gold somehow adds a lot more than a few grand to the final price

Of course, but you get to the point of diminished returns with a volatile commodity like precious metals.

Don't get B&R either.....Talking to a guy, his father collects Invicta, he doesn't wear them because they are too big......but he collects them.
    Add Invicta to the list.

Panerai comes to mind. How much money buys you a basic two hand (yes, only two) manual wind watch with no date and an ETA 6497? $5000+ for a "dive watch" with no seconds hand and no bezel?

I love Panerai but I can't stomach those prices on such simplistic designs. They have some in-house movements now, but $8k-$10k for a sandwich dial?

I'm surprised people complain about Bell & Ross. They have three handers under $3k and chronographs under $5k.

What is wrong with no seconds hand? It was good enough for the Italian navy.

I have increasing been falling in love with Panerai but the prices are crazy for some of their watches. But their new watches hold nothing on a vintage piece price wise. I love the sandwich dial and the minute and hour hand only. I doubt I will own anytime soon cause I am a poor bastard but I like them even if they are overpriced.
