I wrote too hastily, not having seen this first:

    Books about watches
    Books about cars and racing
Fiction books that I should read before I die

I realized my recommendations would be irrelevant to his first two categories.
As for the third, well, no-one needs another list, least of all from me.

Killing Patton was pretty good if you're a history buff

I would suggest you push your boundaries with some of the coolest fiction around. These two books can be described in any number of ways, even SF, but they don't actually fit in any niche that we usually use as a way to characterize books.

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson- mix in historical WWII fiction with techno thriller with SF and maybe you will be close to describing the genre, It's none of these things, but it has elements of all of them. It is amazingly entertaining.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman- another one that does not really fit into a genre. It's part Mythology/ fantasy, part SF, part Horror. It's 100% one of the coolest fiction books I've ever read, and I've read quite a few.

I mean, if you've never read Lord of the Flies, that's a must read before you die. Most Vonnegut, too.

Savages, by Don Winslow. The first chapter is simply "F**k you!" and tells you all you need to know about the book.

Once in awhile you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

    No Sci-Fi?
Does that mean Lord of Light is out? No Roadside Picnic?

I have read Lord of the Flies and I have read a couple from Vonnegut (Slaughterhouse Five and Cat's Cradle).
