Patriotism - Lost to political correctness?

    How patriotic are you?

With globalisation and migration is it wrong to be insular and love you're home country above all others?

Is patriotism now seen as a form of racism?

Despite being rather involved with politics and politicians, I am definitely not a patriot. I am as proud of my country as I am of my eye color or height (i.e., things beyond my control).

I am, however, a fan of certain principles and ideologies that my country espouses (e.g., free speech); and I abhor certain principles and ideologies that my country represents (e.g., interference and religion).

There are ideologies that I appreciate in other countries (e.g., Scandinavian system of welfare) and there are ideologies in other countries that I abhor (e.g., religious fundamentalism).

Not to be punchy, because I do think this is an interesting topic, but I bet it'll end up being a bit slippery for this forum.
It is now my duty to completely drain you.

No, I don't think it is, not by right thinking people anyway. However, in the UK at least (and I'm sure in other countries too) there are people and politicians who twist patriotism into intolerance.
Patriotism and the Union Flag in particular took a massive hit over here in the late 70s and early 80 when they were co-operate by the far right movement. Things had recovered a bit from the late 90s, but I fear there is now a danger of that happening again at the hands of the anti European parties.

I did hover over the post button for a wee while but interestingly this group is a microcosm of the people who have had to think about this question, maybe for the first time in history?

I think there is a healthy respect for others on the forum and this can be discussed sensibly?

Guys, I'm going to have to refer you to rule #3 and close this one. You are welcome to take it to PM, however, if you'd like.
