    RIP Coach Smith

I know that on an international forum, a lot of you won't recognize the name Dean Smith. Here in North Carolina, though, he is a legend, as much for being a humanitarian as a coach.

For those of you who do watch US college basketball, you have this man to thank for the shot clock. He didn't invent the Four Corners offense, but he perfected it to the point that he changed the game forever.

He coached so many fantastic players, who went on to have storied careers. Jokingly, he's referred to as the only man to ever hold Michael Jordan to 13 points in a game.

(I can't believe Rasheed Wallace isn't on that list!)

But I most admire him for recruiting Charlie Scott, and for pushing for change beyond the court as well.

A great man. He will be missed.

I have a few friends that are hardcore basketball fans and have been talking about this a lot. A sad day for the sport I'm sure.
It is now my duty to completely drain you.

I hadn't heard the bad news, may he rest in peace. A very well respected man, wonderful coach, and leader of the community...my Mom is a huge of college basketball too.

Wow, sorry to hear this. I used to be a Duke fan... my childhood friend Tommy Amaker played there. One of the greatest coaches of all time. He will be missed.

I'm a big Duke fan. Didn't realize you knew Tommy Amaker. He's another class act.

Some great ones are no longer with us - Coach Smith, Rick Majerus, Jimmy V. , John Wooden - as far as I know Lute O., John Chayney, John Thompson are still around.

Very sad to hear of his passing. I'm a Georgia Tech grad and played in the basketball pep band during the Bobby Cremins era. Dean Smith was a great coach and his impact on college basketball was profound.
