Free Diving? Who here does it?

I was just wondering: How long can you hold your breath?
On any given day, I can do 90 seconds or so. Maybe 2 minutes max. And that's while NOT moving.
How does one work up to 3-5 minutes?
Is it easier to do that underwater? - since the consequences of not holding it are unpleasant?

You practice timing how long you can hold your breath for and build up the time. Exercises to increase chest/lung expansion.
As this is a watch forum step one is to buy an apnea watch !
I think there are breathing techinques to blow off CO2 before you take the final breath as it is the build up of CO2 that makes you want to inhale.
I think underwater practice is best so you don't cheat.

Oh, and one more thing if you decide to take up freediving, make a will.

Just for interest this is Jose one of the fitness instructors at the class I do, her other job is as a mermaid ! I believe she said she can do 4+ minutes now as she swims under boats for tourists.

In all physical performance muscle memory is everything. Breathing is something we very very rarely control through conscious decisions, so the muscles that control it are very set in their ways, and unused to being given instructions for more than a moment. Like most things worth doing, impressive improvements will follow from regular, frequent practice.
Lung capacity can gradually be improved, but I don't know how much of a long-term process that is. (And it has the downside of making off the peg jackets not fit properly )
My lung capacity is good but when I tried holding my breath just now my body starts complaining after only 45 seconds (or a minute if I breath out slowly)
