Thread: Jeremy Clarkson suspended by BBC

  1. #21
I'm not sure how Clarkson is generally perceived in the USA, but he is an interesting figure in terms of the way he polarised people. Within an hour or so of the news breaking the Guardian (left wing paper) had published an opinion piece saying he should resign and the Telegraph (right wing paper) had a poll on their website where readers had overwhelmingly voted he should stay.
The news ties in nicely with my irrational annoyance thread, because I think the broad acceptance of Clarkson's brand of deliberately offensive schoolboy humour is a direct result of the popularly of Monty Python and the associated notion that there can be something intelligently irreverent and transgressive in bigotry. The idea that by being offensive you are "standing up" to political correctness.

Compared to a lot of comedians over here he is completely inoffensive and compared to a lot of politicians fairly moderate.

That is all I will say because I think anything else will end up in a political realm.

I guess my overall view is "Don't take life too seriously. You'll never get out alive."

Alright, if it's all just a joke and offensiveness is positively applauded, then I think the most delightful poetic justice that could befall him is that he develop testicular cancer requiring his castration.

    Better?

On the whole I agree with your last statement, but something about Clarkson really winds me up, so apologies if I came over a little strongly.

Perhaps a reality show could be made of it?

This reads like an ArchieLuxury thread, comedy can be polarising.
I like that under that annoying accent , that he is a true revhead, who likes to thrash fast expensive cars, while being completely obnoxious.
Just an uncultured version of Archie really, doing it to cars not watches. :-)

In other news, I enjoy how they are describing it as a "fracas".

It's a nice word, incredibly vague. I like to think it was a full on brawl like this...

Yes, haha! An euphemism for sure!
