Though to be fair, Heaviside did get an atmospheric layer named after him (it reflects MF radio waves over the horizon)
It's the final countdown! PM me before they're all gone!

Pud also pitched in a two man rotation. Tell that to the modern 5 man rotation most teams use.

It is entirely possible that Edmund Hillary was the second person to summit Mt. Everest.
The real question is why anyone bothers to remember Columbus at all.

Like it that you mention relatively .... how about Lorentz, the father, not the son, who was second to his old man, literally (duh) and figuratively? Lorentz had essentially developed the full relativistic theory that has made Einstein famous, yet when he realized the implications of his computations he assumed he must have made a mistake. He checked and rechecked - it (almost) drove him crazy.
Einstein did the same, gave it some more thought, put groundbreaking context to it and became famous. That was not an overnight process, though and it took very long before his theory / implications were generally accepted.
Back to the sports edition of seconds:
Soccer:
The Dutch have yet to win the big title (world championship)
1974: Germany - Netherlands (2 - 1)
1978: Argentina - Netherlands (3 - 1)
2010: Spain - Netherlands (1 - 0)
Cycling
Joop Zoetemelk finished 6 times 2nd in the Tour de France and did win only once (1980).
Read a little more on Joop here
