    true I think for me am going to go the Gagarin route ... for those not in the Russian watch know you have the famous Gagarin watch

    and well to get one hundred percent kosher and in very good condition could head toward a grand now retail or as little as £50 if falling apart all down to condition and what percentage is kosher and their are that many fakes re-dial franks and every thing in between that it's a mine field... so you got to decide what you want to do take my Gagarin I choose good condition and close to original and found one that had the original movement case and hands and a new dial design true to the original one and so paid for that which I thought was a good price and compromised with out losing anything of what it was / is and what it means and if it was done lovely and is a pleasure to wear .

    so I had kath double check the watch I was looking at and we was feeling it the same that it was basicly ok but had a few little niggles to it but it was outwards a decent looking watch with maybe a little bit of work done on it too it .. but did it take it away from it and I think not ..but at the same time these little things affect price so I offer a keen price due to these niggle and so they can take it or leave it and if they do great I got a nice good looking watch for what I would have paid if they take the offer great if not have not lost anything and the same principle can be used on the next as what caught my attention was the look so that should always be the main factor surely

    ^^ probably a good decision for you to stay in your comfort zone there buddy -maybe im wrong but i suspect vintage Omega are a bigger minefield than the Sturmanskie and im sure more expensive to service

    yep new hands and dial the case is the right type screw back (the bubble back one are wrong ) right movement 17 j (15j some say was probably what he wore but the 17j is what every one goes by ) but yeah decent enough if you like the idea and a decent look of the original so you could not go far wrong if from a good Russian seller mate had right issues when he tried to get one first one arrived doa then the replacement he bought had the wrong case and the third wrong hands and movement . but I built one decent one out the parts

    As others already mentioned, the seamasters - and vintage Omega in general - can be a problem. I prefer their solid movements, which are easier to repair: 30T2 and derivatives, such as cal. 260/61/65/66/67/68/69 or cal. 280/81/85/86 - all hand wind movements.

    Their authenticity is not always easy to establish because:
    1. The Omega Archives are far from exhaustive;
    2. Local markets often had variations on a more common theme;
    3. Omega dials were not as durable as others, leaving room for multiple re-dials;
    4. Crowns - and frequently the crystals - were 'consumables', they could have been changed along different maintenance procedures.

    That said, the hunt can be fun. Good luck, Ismy.

    As I discovered, and wrote up in one of my five things:

    SSIH, the company that included Omega and Tissot, managed its own distribution in some countries but worked through agents in others. Some agents were allowed to contract with outside manufacturers to build their own Omegas.

    Of course Gagarin’s watch is preserved at the museum of Cosmonautics, which also has a virtual tiour facility. It’s a bit clunky, but with a bit of effort you can see the actual Watch he wore...

    0D30 says she loves it when I’m maddeningly cryptic so...

    yeah dav caught it in london i think it was they did a big thing for one of his birthdays i think it was or could have been the anniversary of his flight can't really remember now sure he did a thread ..

    will add link if i find it

    but still a big debate whether he wore that one thou ... as his passing out watch from the air-force would have been the early 15j one some say other say he was given the one he wore later on which also works maybe depends what story you like to the point of an early zim being in space first attach to was it larnka was it or could have been one of the other dogs they test space flight on first those technicians love a bit of tom foolery

    but these story's normal end up in heated debate depend whose watch they want to believe I have fallen in to that some time myself when we all romanticise watches and history together

    ****VINTAGE OMEGA SEAMASTER DE VILLE AUTOMATIC WRIST WATCH ****

    Sloppily researched article as an overview of space watches, Alan, sadly

    Shturmanskie and Strela were both originally model names (Strela a nickname) for watches from the 1st Moscow Watch Factory (later to become Poljot)

    It also ignores a lot of less glam models to focus on the big sellers/ cult faves:
    Where are the

    3133 Strelas?

    the Timex Datalinks?
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timex_Datalink

    and this, a genuinely useful 24hr Cosmonavigator, designed by cosmonaut Vladimir Dzhanibekov? (Is did a thread :-)

    Good overview of Russian space watches here

    And I know I’ve pasted this a few times, but comparison of NASA and Soviet approach to space watches here

    And, just sayin’
