    New York Trip

Hello my American pals...a big trip for me, I'll be landing in the Big Apple, next Thursday.

Any suggestions for off-the-track places to visit and naturally watch haunts I can't miss?

    Thanks in advance

There are 5 "don't miss" places for every taste - impossible to predict what you'll like.

    My recommendations:

*walk everywhere - subway is the second choice
*eat street food, by the slice
*do the Guggenheim by taking the elevator to the top and strolling down the ramp
*either the Met or the Natural History Museum can easily suck up an entire day
*if on a budget, queue up at TKTS in Times Square and see whatever you can get tickets to
*if not on a tight budget, go online and see what's available. I prefer previews, where possible
*No - you won't find seats for Hamilton
*The Empire State Building is old school fun - the World Trade Center Memorial is better
*The Circle Line is a classic - but I'm a sucker for river/harbor tours

enjoy - you can't possibly do everything, so pick 3 and commit.

p.s., don't buy any Rolexes in Times Square. In fact, unless going to the theater, don't go anywhere near Times Square.

It used to be fun - but now it's a Disney Theme Park, complete with ridiculous crowds.

Jealous of your trip - I've never been stateside! Good sounding tips from Ken. Enjoy, and send pics.

I wouldn’t buy anything here but the Ralph Lauren Boutique has a pretty cool vintage watch section. Grab a cup of coffee at Ralph’s Coffee while you’re there.

Grand Central Watch is a cool quick stop if you’re near the station.

We went on line and pre-booked attractions. Harbour tour was first on our list! Wtc tour and empire estate, apparently we get to jump the queue

We're staying in the New Yorker hotel, looks pretty central..Madison Square garden accross the street...I can't actually believe I'm going there, been a life long dream of mine...

I'll print your list and bring it with me...thanks so much Kenneth

Your tour with Bob was the final inspiration for my trip

New Yorker is good. If you are a hockey or basketball fan, see a game at MSG. You'll want to figure out the subway system (it's easy) to get to museums, etc. You *can* walk, but the subway is easier and the Natural History Museum has its own stop (and is 2.5 miles from the New Yorker). I would take the subway north and then wander back - walking through Central Park is one of my special pleasures - but the nearby streets offer plenty of scenery for a first-time visitor.

I warned against Times Square, but nearby are Rockefeller Center and St Patrick's Cathedral. If you want to see authentic kitsch, consider a Rockettes show (you won't find anything like it anywhere else). If you are into ice skating, try either Rockefeller Center or the Wollman Rink in Central Park. Also in that neighborhood is MOMA, which, while interesting, is probably not on my list of things to do on your *first* trip to NYC.

Above all, assume that you will come back again sometime. Pick a few attractions and take your time enjoying both them *and* the travel time (mostly walking) in between.
