Argos started off as catalogues - the shops came later - wouldn't be a surprise if they went back to being purely postal.
When I was 19 I had a job with Argos, working in the stock room. Think I lasted three weeks in that one

Used to get them at co-op as kid. I can only just remember them.
Maybe they did them at other outlets so garages might be right

Pretty swell.
Some years ago and well within my memory we had places that sold geeky things, including vinyls. We called them record stores.

Ha! New England Comics is an odd duck in that they're similar to what Radio Shack used to be. To this day, each store is different (somewhat like Outer Limits), and at some stores, you can buy electronic components (and I mean transistors, resistors, capacitors, comics, action figures, board games and puzzles, chemistry and physics kits, puzzle books etc).

And there's also Newbury Comics, which is the commercial version of NEC, with more branded clothes and crap than anything geeky.

I agree that the demise of good secondhand shops is one of the sad consequences of online shopping
I too spent hours of my teenage years (and later) trawling army surplus, secondhand books, old furniture shops and comic stores.
Great independent places, they're a dwindling breed
My fave was Forever People, a comic store on Park Street in Bristol. Two storeys totally packed with US comics, comic albums and manga, sf books - just heaven
I discovered Los Bros Hernandez here, old 70s underground stuff, some great French albums
Couldn't find a pic, but others wax nostalgic about it
