I'd select the serviced watch in better condition. Even after servicing the older watch, it would not be in the same condition as the watch that started out in better condition.

Would you buy:
a) an automatic watch in honest used condition and 8 years old without having been serviced for price x
Or
b) same watch, 2 years old, much better condition for price z
Given the price of a service is roughly y, then x+y=z

Basically I’m estimating £170 for a service of an ETA 2824. Watch a is about £380, watch b is about £550
Watch a
watch b
Sorry my sense of humor might not translate well into text.
Seeing the variables replaced by constants, I vote Watch B, the newer one.
I am usually happy to service a watch that has personal history or family heirlooms.
The service costs seem rarely justified for a new purchase that has no specific rarity or personal meaning.
For my "affordables" I am fine just letting them wear down into gentle senility, as the service is more expensive than a replacement.
Too many watches, not enough wrists.

Same here
And yeah I think b feels like the way to go. I’d hate to shell out for a service on a watch I then flipped.

Once in awhile you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

I'll need to go set up some simulations on my Beowulf array, and I'll get back to you in a week of so, when the modeling is complete.
I recognize the words you used but I have no idea what the eff you just said.

Option B. I’d even pay a slight premium to avoid having the watch have to go immediately out for service.
