On condition alone the newer one is worth the premium.

I don't need an equation. I never go with the older watch regardless of condition. I've never had good luck with older watches. Why do you think I have so many brand new reissues? Modern watches have taken giant leaps in materials, quality and durability. Case in point I stretched the bracelet out on my first Rolex Sub from 1985 in six years, yet my modern Explorer II has gone an extra year and a half from that point and the bracelet is as tight and the same length as the day I bought it. And let's not even discuss the clasp. I've had vintage Speedmasters and the modern ones are seriously better in the areas that matter. I know I much prefer my Breitling 1957 SOH Reissue to the original. It's even worth more. While I'll easily take the cash for a vintage Paul Newman Daytona, I prefer to wear the new SS Panda.

I agree with all of the above - and then there’s repairability. I recently read the thoughts of a watchmaker on the subject of service intervals. He said that the interval can be stretched on modern watches, but not vintage. A combination of parts availability, and the cost of those parts, meant that older watches should be serviced regularly - unless you are prepared to write them off at some point.

This is quite lovely, although it's just a day/night indicator at 12, not a moon phase.

Hmm... that’s a thought - it could replace my Alpinist.

Taxes. Forgot the taxes. Add 20% and a bit more.
Probably not, then.

AFAIK, it's some kind of top grade Miyota. On par with top grade ETAs and clones riding on the 'Swiss made' BS in my book.
