Given British industry's keen eye for the wrong step in the 70s, I wouldn't be surprised it at one stage there was a version that only plugged into the mains....

Hey, DA, how can that be a wrong step when forty five years later Apple are pioneering a watch with basically the same characteristic?

More to the point, this little beauty is from the fifties - it's an A409, the exact production version of the watch worn on Everest and Identical but for a couple of detail changes on the dial. The 18mm lugged version is as rare as rare can be and worth quite a bit. I've got half a dozen 16mm ones but despite looking very hard indeed for a decade, this is the first 18mm one I've found that wasn't very silly money. The movement has no shock protection (pre '59) and has a C prefix followed by a fairly low serial which I'd estimate puts it at around 54 - 55. It's the British equivalent of an early seventies Speedmaster, except with precisely the same movement!

here's Hillary's - from the collection of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers (from an image by Bridgeman):

I'd say it's about that, possibly a smidge larger, but not 35mm. I've never taken my big micrometer to it , but that's close enough.
