One of my favorite things about HODINKEE has always been the community. I’ve worked for a handful of publications over the year and have never experienced anything quite like it. Over the last two years or so, we’ve been spending more time in Los Angeles, and I’ve been fortunate enough to be there for a number of our events and meet-ups, getting to know the incredible West Coast watch scene in the process.*
At one of our first LA events I met today’s guest, Chris Bruss. Technically he works in Hollywood, but Chris is a disarmingly nice guy, someone who lacks all of the showiness and pretension that you'd typically associate with someone who spends his days collaborating with A-list actors, directors, comedians, and more. His story sounds almost like a cliché: A hardworking kid from the Midwest gets his start in the mailroom at CAA and, before you know it, becomes the president of comedy media titan Funny Or Die.
During our last trip to LA, our founder Ben Clymer and I sat down with Chris to get the full version of his backstory, a look at the early bootstrap days of Funny Or Die, and some hints about what they might be doing next. Beyond his career though, Chris and I have a number of shared obsessions we had to talk about too. These include Grand Seiko watches, gaming frequent flyer points systems (despite doing it on competing airlines), and looking for that next under-the-radar thing to get way too into. This week's episode is quintessential HODINKEE Radio –*it's just a couple of nerds hanging out, talking about nerd stuff.
We hope you enjoy Episode 30 of HODINKEE Radio. Check out the show notes below and let us know what you think in the comments.
Wrist Check

I fully associate Chris with his Seiko Prospex Diver SLA017 at this point. He was wearing it the first time we met and it really does feel like a perfect fit for him. The limited edition recreation of Seiko's original 1965 dive watch debuted at Baselworld 2017 and collectors went crazy for it right away – I remember getting tons of text messages and Instagram DMs from folks asking how they could reserve one of the 2,000 pieces ahead of time. Despite being that desirable though, it's a relatively inconspicuous watch that bystanders wouldn't recognize as anything out of the ordinary. That kind of low-key cool, the kind that's better the closer you look and the more you know, seems to be Chris in a nutshell.
