Thread: Is Seiko overreaching?

    Is Seiko overreaching?

Not sure what's going on but with the pricing of their new Monsters and these LX models, are they looking to tech a new level of buyers or will they alienate their core?

These LX models would be intriguing but at $5K+, I'm just not sure.

They’re acting like a greedy businessman trying to make as much $$$ as possible while ignoring the fact that their name still have that “cheap watch” stigma

To me, Seiko decisions were always - somehow - hard to follow. Therefore, I'm afraid I can't add much...

Anyway, just to show another example

and this article may add some light (only for the US market)

I'm not sure I'd go that far. The stigma is not of their own doing, just a reality. But they should and must be aware of it and like other companies, try to differentiate their higher quality offerings from premium. many examples can be cited watchmaking and other industries.

Still, isn't it all about the pricing and who they are trying to get to buy their products?

Yes. But going up market seems to be the current trend for luxury goods, since the 'middle ground' has become almost a desert. But again, I'm no expert on these matters.

The Bloomberg article reaches the same conclusion I did (yes, before reading that article!), namely that the branding change for Grand Seiko was intended both to distinguish GS and allow it to move further upscale, thus leaving more space for the regular Seiko brand to take over the $4000-7000 range with some classier Seiko branded models. Mark my words, we’ll soon see GS move into the $7-12k range (not counting expensive limited editions).

Nobody buys analog watches anymore, it's all about the smart stuff. Seiko corp would rather sell 1 for 5k than 20 for 250 in today's market.

Sent from Arrakis using Spice Melange

That blue and black GMT is cool, but it's not $5k cool.
Once in awhile you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
