I'm talking about the move A Clockwork Orange. I remember when it was released it was so avant garde....cutting edge...hip.
But now, it's vision of the future is just so off the mark. The '60's clothing stayed in the '60's and has not been resuscitated. Gangs of roving street thugs seem to have played themselves out. And milk bars just don't seem a reality either. The whole curing/punishing criminals does seem to flip back and forth every few years so I guess they got that right at least.
The Walter (now Wendy) Carlos score kinda falls flat too as just to "Moogy" too, though it's fun to see what was possible on those old machines.(I guess they outlasted sitars)
To be fair, near future dystopia sci fi tends to date pretty quickly.
It's a film that is still interesting from in terms of its place in the history of UK censorship. Lots of people think it was banned for many years (and to be fair the distributors played on this when it was eventually re-released) but in fact Kubrick forbid it from being distributed over here after receiving death threats on its original release. When an independent cinema in London (The Scala) did show it in the 90s he sued them and ultimately the legal expenses bankrupt them (despite such people as Scorcese contributing to their defense fund).
After Kubrick's death it was re released with lots of fanfare and... Yes, everyone thought it was dated and got bored of it quite quickly.
