Longines has built a sterling reputation on designs that are aesthetically balanced, elegant, and reliable. The manufacturer out of Saint-Imier continues to produce new models that uphold the tradition, but perhaps the most interesting modern models are the ones directly drawn from the brand’s storied past.*
The new Legend Diver in PVD is one such model. The watch is a thoroughly modern interpretation of a model that put Longines dive watches on the map, but the black PVD finishing is an exciting twist that takes the fan favorite squarely into new territory.*
The Legend Diver story starts with the Longines Diver reference 7042. Longines is known for a conservative aesthetic; dive watches usually aren't known for refinement. Their tool roots dictate a design that's purely functional, but the reference 7042 did something that very few other dive watches in the 1960s could do, and that's strike a careful balance between a classy aesthetic and purely functional legibility. The 7042 has gained a cult following for its careful balancing act. During this era of dive watches, bright colors and odd case shapes were favored. Polished surfaces and a monochrome aesthetic was usually reserved for dress watches – but the 7042 flew in the face of all the trends of the time. And the new Legend Diver in PVD is an example of Longines bucking trends again in 2019.*
A few years ago, Longines released the Legend Diver, which followed the blueprints left behind from the reference 7042. It remains one of the watches that set a great example in the early days of the modern re-edition trend. With 300m of water resistance, a modern, over-engineered Super Compressor internal bezel system, and dial that maintained classic proportions, it was an instant hit.*
Now Longines is back with the same watch, but in a different finish: PVD. The black coating adds a sporty element to the Legend Diver that’s never been present before. It's a clear departure from the roots of the watch, but it works fabulously. The monochrome motif of the original Legend Diver is perfectly suited to a black case, and Longines has nailed it with this execution.*
