By now, Grand Seiko needs no introduction. The vertically integrated manufacturer has consistently produced timepieces of the utmost quality that have earned a stellar reputation among collectors. When Grand Seiko entered the U.S. market, the horological community paid attention, and for good reason. The extreme focus on the details, superior finishing, and a design language that's incredibly distinct have set the brand apart.*
And today, we're happy to introduce two more Grand Seiko timepieces in the HODINKEE Shop. Meet the SBGH213 and the limited edition SBGK005.
If you think youíve seen the SBGH213 before, you wouldn't be entirely wrong. The previous iteration of this watch featured gold numerals and went by the designation SBGH263. This new version features silver applied numerals and the same fantastic 9S85 automatic Hi-Beat movement. The new iteration of this watch is a bit more subtle, with the silver applied numerals playing off the cream-colored dial in a way that's elegant, but almost unexpected. Silver indices allow Grand Seiko's mastery of polished surfaces to shine through, and the 9S85 beating beneath the dial is unparalleled Ė we think this movement is one of the best kept secrets in modern watchmaking.*
The SBGK005 is entirely new, and you may not see many in the metal, because there are only 1,500 examples of the watch in total. But if you do see it, the dial will pull you in. The SBGK005 features a dial finish thatís meant to emulate the texture of Mt. Iwake, and what that means to folks who have never seen Mt. Iwake is that it's simply a watch dial bursting with character. The light reflects off the dial in a way that makes this go from a conservative blue-dialed dress watch to a total enigma with a mysterious personality. While the balanced aesthetic is certainly one reason to love this watch, perhaps the most compelling aspect of the watch is the movement. Meet the latest manual-wind caliber from Grand Seiko, the 9S63. The movement builds on the well-established caliber 9S64, so in a sense, you're getting decades of research and development beneath that mesmerizing blue dial.
