“Watches, Stories, and Gear” is a weekly roundup of some of our favorite watch content, great stories from around the web, and cool gear that we’ve got our eye on. This week’s installment is brought to you by Bezelheads, a free and open platform for peer-to-peer watch sales.
Founded in March 2019 by watch enthusiast Humphrey Yang, Bezelheads is designed to be a simple, yet powerful platform for facilitating peer-to-peer watch sales. Specifically, the brand and platform reflects Humphrey’s desire to build a community that values service, price transparency, sincerity, and integrity in the way transactions are done online.
On Bezelheads, you’ll find it easy to browse watch listings with seller info, watch condition, and other critical information front and center. Additionally, sellers who have a presence on multiple platforms across the web will be able to have their feedback aggregated directly to the listing — the sort of transparency that benefits both buyer and seller. Also integrated into the platform is an anonymous, crowdsourced pricing guide that lists a record of past sales completed through Bezelheads, as well as sales data submitted by the community from other channels such as eBay, Reddit’s “r/watchexchange,” forums, and other marketplaces. Each submission requires proof (receipt or URL link to a final sale) to be approved for the pricing guide.

The entire service that Bezelheads offers is currently free. You can submit a question or any feedback directly to Humphrey, and he will implement any necessary changes to improve and make Bezelheads a great community marketplace for watches.

Worn & Wound – From War to the Auction Block: The Story of Sgt. Rowson’s Panerai Kampfschwimmer

Last year, our man across the pond Mark McArthur-Christie told the incredible story of a Panerai that was hitting the auction block. There’s not much I can say here without giving the story away, so you’re just going to have to check out full write up by clicking below (trust us, it’s a great read).

Science News – A New Optical Atomic Clock’s Heart is as Small as a Coffee Bean

Atomic and optical clocks are fascinating things. We’ve covered them before on Worn & Wound, and since that article first published it seems as though there are almost monthly developments in the technology, with everything from greater accuracy to miniaturization at play. Case in point, a recent article in Science News covered a new type of optical clock using light tuned to rubidium atoms (with a “beat rate” of trillions of times per second), making it an extremely accurate point of reference for time. Furthermore, the atom chamber is just 3mm across and mounted on a silicon chip. Just to give you a sense of how small that is relative to what has come before, previous optical clock chambers measured closer to 1m across.

City Lab – Carefully, Japan Reconsiders the Trash Can

When I (Ilya) studied abroad in Japan years ago, I recall on numerous occasions having trash to throw out and no public trash can to put it in. As a native New Yorker, the lack of public trash bins (Japan removed them after a 1995 Aum Shinrikyo sarin gas attack) was a small but notable culture shock (though New York itself seems to be lacking in trash bins these days, too). This helped to inspire a culture of waste reduction in Japan that changed the way people dealt with everything from dog waste to cigarette butts.

The Verge – Hollywood is Quietly Using AI to Help Decide Which Movies to Make

This almost goes without saying, but nearly every decision behind a film today is painstakingly thought out, and as we’ve seen with some recent high-profile projects, a misstep can quickly doom a film before it ever hits theaters. In our increasingly automated age, it looks like producers may soon be taking some of the weight off their shoulders and letting AI make the tough decisions.

Flint and Tinder – Olive Overshirt

I don’t know about you, but in New York we’re in that weird transitional period where it’s brisk in the morning, hot in the afternoon, and downright cold in the evening. On days like these, I love a nicely-cut overshirt to layer over a tee when the temperature dips. This one from Flint and Tinder, with its great color and interesting woven fabric, does the trick.
