be careful you don't loose the beep spring if this model has one looks like one top right just under the top half of the battery catch

Thanks, ismy. I managed to install a new battery with your hint, but it looks like the watch is kaput.
The display looks like this:
And when I close the lid, electrostatic ticking is heard in 1s intervals and some buzzing, too.
I thought it only needed a battery change and already ordered a new strap, now cancelled the order.

well open it you should see some where ac and a gold spot while touching that, touch the battery back also make sure the speaker is touching the beep spring right.. as in making sure the backs on the right way up

On some watches when you pull the stem it disconnects power to the circuitry.Some would also say that this stops intermittent spiking as you insert the battery (some electronic circuits don't like this but I don't think it applies to watches(happy to be corrected)).
