OMEGA SPEEDMASTER: TO THE MOON AND BACK

Image via Sotheby’s.

The 50th anniversary of the moon landing is fast approaching (it’s July 20th, by the way). To mark this important milestone, Sotheby’s is putting together a Speedmaster-themed auction that will take place in New York the day before. There will be 50 lots — many of them vintage Speedies — but there will also be a handful of moon landing-related ephemera. If you’re in New York, then you can preview the auction at Sotheby’s from*July 13-18, and the auction begins at 2pm on the 19th.*

NOT JUST WATCHES: THE JOYS OF COLLECTING HOROLOGICAL EPHEMERA

Speaking of ephemera…collecting watches is good and all, but collecting watch ephemera is a whole other level of watch madness. There’s boxes, papers (manuals, receipts, hang tags, etc.), bracelets, straps and buckles, advertisements, dealer signs and display stands, tools, and even spare parts to hunt after. Our own @VintageDiver breaks it down.

THE NEW YORK TIMES
STRANGER THINGS 3: A GUIDE TO THE MAJOR POP CULTURE REFERENCES

Stranger Things is back for its third outing on Netflix this weekend, and this time the show really ups the ante with its oh-so-many ‘80s pop culture references. From Red Dawn and Terminator to Cheers and Alien, there are easter eggs throughout the entire eight-episode stretch. The New York Times breaks them down (and I’m sure they’ve missed a few) if you want to compare notes.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE US’ MOST ICONIC FOOD

Brooklyn’s Coney Island.

On July 4th, Nathan’s held its annual hot dog eating contest in Coney Island, where competitors down —and keep down — as many weiners and buns as they can to claim the title. It’s a New York tradition, as is the hot dog itself, and though hot dogs are straight up Americana today, the origin story of the humble hot dog begins at the beach in South Brooklyn by way of Germany.
