Dorian
For the US East coast members, the latest projections @ 05:00, eastern time, 31 Aug.
Looks like it might turn north before landfall, impacting Ga/SC. coastal areas.

My brother is about to fly back from Atlanta. I hope he can beat the hurricane.

He'll be fine. We'll just get some rain if that. Based on the current trajectory of course. My friends on the SC coast are prepping for a foot of rain or more.

Only one hurricane in modern records has had winds stronger than Dorian's
Since 1950, only one storm has had stronger winds in the Atlantic than Dorian has right now.
Hurricane Allen in 1980 had maximum winds of 190 mph.
Here's a look at the strongest storms the Atlantic has seen:
- Allen (1980): Maximum winds of 190 mph
- Dorian (2019): Current winds of 185 mph
- Gilbert (1988): Maximum winds of 185 mph
- Wilma (2005): Maximum winds of 185 mph

We fled to Alabama 2 days ago and may go home on Thursday. We live 4 miles from the coast and the flooding may be severe.

My wifes sister and her husband are on Merritt Island and have decided on riding it out along with some of their neighbors.

I'm sure that they are well informed. They're on the fourth floor of their steel and concrete condo.

Jato, steel & concrete aren't much protection in a hurricane. The other architectural component is glass!
Ask any former resident of the Tiara building in Riviera Beach, just south of Merritt, what they think of the idea of sitting out a hurricane.
Merritt is going to be in a real danger zone as Dorian claws it's way up the coast. If I were you, I'd be doing everything in my power to get them the hell out of there!
