Above where you can Like a post, you'll see an icon with an up and down arrow. This allows you to give positive reputation to a member for making a quality contribution to the forum. Maybe something that deserves more of an acknowledgement than just a Like. Over time, your reputation will grow, and you'll see more green boxes above your avatar. And as you gain reputation, you also grow in rep power so you can hand out more to others. Of course it's not scientific since different people have different ideas of what constitutes a post worthy of giving rep. But as we all know, post count is not necessarily an indicator of the quality of a member's contributions to the community. Reputation gives everyone another metric to see how those around them are viewed by others, and allows us all to reward those who really go the extra mile with their offerings. Give it a try!
The negative rep will be going away at some point soon, since that generally doesn't lead to anything good.

Interesting concept, all forum members are equal but some or more equal that others.
Just kidding, seemed perfect for a bit of Orwell.

I forgot to mention that anyone not wishing to participate can go into their settings and hide their rep bar. People can still give it to you, but it will stay private.

How do you tell the difference between a hidden rep bar and a zero rep bar?

After 10 000 posts, I bet my little green square will still be proudly alone

What happens if you get hundreds of squares; do you become a moderator?

If you come to a fork in the road; take it, and then put it down so someone else can use it.
