The UK seems capable of producing actors like Rigg (Patrick Stewart comes to mind as well) who have the depth and chops to take on classic roles yet are equally at home in popular fare. I’m not sure we have that here in the US. At least no one comes immediately to mind.

It’s true, and I’ve been thinking about this (sporadically) for several hours without knowing the reason why. There’s a raft of actors who move effortlessly between stage and screen, but that’s probably the case everywhere.

A significant number of British actors go to RADA whereas relatively few American actors have academic training. Those who do go to drama schools in the US focus more on the technical aspects of stage & film production, and relatively little on actual acting. However, there are quite a number of acting coaches in the US -- Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, Sanford Meisner, etc, and at least in years gone by many film actors would study with such folk. Nowadays who knows what they do.
England also has a far bigger theater scene than the US. Christ, when I lived in London in '78 you could see a different play every night for several months running. Even in New York, which has the US's most active theater scene, there's nothing comparable to the UK. So English actors have a lot more opportunities to practice their craft than here in the US.
Also mainstream cinema in the US is a lot more homogenous than elsewhere. The substantial majority of mainstream films made in the US are targeted at teenage males, with the consequence that in order to be a successful actor you have to be young, athletic, and conventionally good looking. This is not true of independent films, where the range of parts is significantly greater than Hollywood fare. However, independents make up a small fraction of the total number of films made each year.

Who died in 2020
An American hero died on Sunday.
>> The Rev. Robert Graetz, whose support of the 1955-56 Montgomery Bus Boycott made him a target of segregationists and sparked a career dedicated to social justice, died Sunday, his daughter Meta Ellis said. He was 92.<<
>> Graetz was the only white clergyman to support the boycott, and like other participants in the boycott, the reverend and his family persisted in the face of harassment, terrorism, and death threats that extended to their preschool children. Vandals poured sugar in their gas tank; slashed their tires and sprayed acid over their cars. White students on segregated school buses shouted "n---r lover" at Graetz and his wife, Jeannie, as they walked the street.
The family home was bombed twice, and while arrests were made, no one was ever convicted. Graetz often became emotional remembering the bombings in later years.<<
