Do you do ferments? I hear prickly pear is a nice addition to hot sauces.
You have an open invitation, Henry! We have a guest room. You can escape your frozen tundra mid-winter and enjoy a climate that almost never freezes (although summer is often cold and foggy.) I do indeed ferment certain things - kimchee, pickles, sourdough starter, for example. I am no expert in it, though. I have enjoyed nopales simply peeled and sautéed with onions and spices. The fruit, I think I have only eaten raw. I do plan to experiment a bit with it!
Too many watches, not enough wrists.

If we ever get down that way, I will surely look you up.

I have been watching this flower slowly develop for the last month, and today it opened. I identified it as Dracunculus vulgaris, "vampire lilly" and it smells like rotting meat.

Be careful with that one mate every part of it is poisonous I believe. The whole family of Araceae are

venus, passion's rockets ,sets afire gentle hearts that music doth inspire,
through the joys of dance and last play
leading them to love the sweetest way.

Indeed, and I don't plan to be eating it any time soon.

On the uphill side of the house, it's dry and rather sunny. The previous owner was very fond of succulents, and this mature growth is beginning to bloom in a surprising display.

No pets - thanks for your concern! On the plus side, these and the other lillies, foxglove, sword ferns and other toxics seem safe from gophers, rabbits and deer.

Depends ant it some animal can build up a resistance to it , like birds and eating rowan berries or mountain ash where if we did we would be in trouble

But probably the smell / taste stops some from eating it but dogs are known to chew plants some times cats too can shred. Plants.
