    Name Brand WIS

A student I work with is a bit of a WIS. He's label conscious so he likes Richard Mille and Hublot. He wants a Patek, but that's because of reputation and not real knowledge. Today, he asked me what I thought of AP. He saw my Explorer from across the room two weeks ago, and nearly fell three times running over to me to look at it. Since then, he always asks me what I'm wearing; sometimes he's impressed, other times not so much. Other than my wife, and I think she comments just to be cute and cheeky, he is the only person I've encountered who has said something about the watch I'm wearing.

I'll let you know what he thought of the Scuba Dude.

The bigger the cross section of people the more likely you are to encounter a WIS. Our CEO is a huge WIS. We talk for hours about watches at certain company events. I get approached all the time by people who are pointed in my direction if they want to know about watches. Our department swallowed up a few others that makes strategic sense to be combined. While coming out of Rolex/Tudor AD I ran into a new colleague of our group. Come to find out she has about ten high end watches. They are out there, it just takes a bit of time to find them.
    Cheers,

    Michael

I’ve only ever met one person who was impressed by brand names - a plumber who wore a fake Rolex.

Mostly, I’ve lived and worked amongst people who are more likely to regard a prestigious watch as a probable indicator of a flash git.

...which is why I prefer my high end watches to be below the radar...

Years ago I bought my dad a Sub when the ceramic first came out. He found it too big so I sold it and bought him a first generation Explorer(36mm). It wasn't until the recent Antique Road Show with the Vet that had the Paul Newman Rolex Daytona came out that he asked me, "Do you have any Rolex." I said "Yes, and so do you." He never made the association. Those that want to notice do. The rest don't care.

I’m fine with being considered a flash git. There are worse things to be.

    That is a great story.

My father wore a watch out of need but didn't really care much about what it may be. My grandfather may have cared a little more since he had the gold Borel. My son can't stand a watch. I have to hold out hope for grandkids. LOL

He was non-comittal towards the Scuba Dude. Thought it was kinda cool, but not all that impressed. I think he would have thought differently if I inflated the price by adding a zero to it.
