“Watches, Stories, and Gear” is a roundup of some of our favorite watch content on Worn & Wound, great stories from around the web, and cool gear that we’ve got our eye on.
This installment of “Watches, Stories, and Gear” is brought to you by the Windup Watch Shop.

Worn & Wound
Time Off*the Wrist: Points of Reference*

While we would assume a large percentage of Worn & Wound readers tell the time with a watch, there’s no denying that a significant portion of the population relies on their cell phone, a computer, or simple clocks in shared spaces to know what time it is. In this piece from 2017, part of our Time Off the Wrist series, Brad Homes takes us through early methods of telling the time that seem even further removed from what we all experience now. The next time you see a watch you’d love to own were it not for a few millimeters in diameter in either direction, or you look at your watch box and just can’t make a decision, reflect on the relief we should all feel that we no longer rely on the local “knocker-upper” to keep us on time.

How to Style Your Vintage Watch

If you needed further evidence of the strong appeal of vintage watches across every sector imaginable, check out this Hypebeast post that matches vintage watches (chosen by none other than Eric Wind) with the trendiest of streetwear. Regardless of your taste in fashion, the photos in this post underscore something that we’ve known for a long time: a good watch just makes anything you’re wearing look better.*

The Ringer
David Arquette on Wrestling, His Up and Down Career, and Nearly Dying

For folks who came of age in the 90s, you likely remember David Arquette as Dewey from the Scream movies. The actor was once considered one of Hollywood’s top up and coming young stars, and for a relatively brief moment he made good on expectations (he shared a Vanity Fair cover with Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith, Benicio del Toro, and Matthew McConaughey, touting the group as the next batch of big stars). Arquette never became a megastar, but he did develop significant ties to the world of professional wrestling, which exist to this day. This story in the Ringer goes through that entire history, and will be fascinating even to those who weren’t aware of Arquette’s wrestling past.

Marques Brownlee
2020 MacBook Air Impressions

If you’re into tech, you probably have a hot take on the MacBook Air. It’s one of the most popular computers Apple has ever built, with a form factor that has become iconic over the years, and represents an accessible entry point into the Mac. Many argue, however, that it’s overpriced for the tech that you get, and better value can be had elsewhere in Apple’s growing range of laptops. Apple recently refreshed the Air, and tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee shared his initial (and quite positive) thoughts on Apple’s latest upgrade to their bestelling portable Mac.*

@watchpartsmotorcycles

Sometimes you come across an Instagram account and just can’t stop scrolling. That’s the kind of experience I had recently with Dan Tanenbaum’s account recently. He goes by @watchpartsmotorcycles on IG, and the handle is perfectly apt: Dan creates sculptures (often of motorcycles, but also of many other objects) from old watch parts. His wildly creative designs have a steam-punk sensibility, and anyone who has ever popped off a caseback of an old mechanical watch and messed around with what’s inside knows that to work with these tiny parts takes a ton of skill and precision.

Vulture
A Debate About*Tiger King Between Me and Myself*

Many of us, during this strange period of social distancing and isolation, have turned streaming services and bingeable TV as a way to deliberately disengage from the news of the day. Tiger King, a new Netflix documentary series, has become something of a hit recently. It’s undeniably compelling, but if you’re in the midst of it and wondering to yourself if it’s actually good or just time consuming trash, you’re not alone. Kathryn VanArendonk of Vulture debates (herself) on the pros and cons of Tiger King, a show which has become America’s top guilty pleasure.*

Neiman Marcus
NYT Front Page Puzzle

If you can’t bring yourself to binge watch Tiger King and need a distraction that could potentially activate just a few more brain cells, perhaps this jigsaw puzzle, available through Neiman Marcus, will do the trick? The front page of the New York Times, filled with small text as it often is, would surely prove to be a challenge for even the most experienced puzzle expert. But what makes this puzzle unique is that it can be customized to depict the front page of the Times for any date that you choose, making it a fantastic birthday or anniversary gift idea for the puzzler in your life.
