The music thing pops into mind first for me, too--can't help it.

But "rock" in the geological sense has multiple meanings to me. Something really small that fits, say, in the palm of your hand, I'd consider a stone. Anything larger, like baseball size to massive formation, I'd say would be a rock. Kath's more spiritual definition is valid, too.

    Same.

Geologically though for me it's simple: pebble is up to a jammie dodger size, round and shiny. Stone is a different shape, or something bigger, but smaller than a rock. A rock is fist-sized but smaller than a boulder. A boulder is about 1m cubed and smaller than a hill or mountain, and we know what they. Boulders can be huge. Indeed, and what do rock climbers climb?

Rocks can be little or big.

As an aside: Where I grew up, a 'rock' was a hard-boiled sweet.
