    Seagull 1963 Quality Issues

For years I've held off purchasing one of the attractive Seagull 1963 variants due to reports of quality issues, and of course I finally ordered one and it arrived today acting like a watch built in 1963. The chrono seconds hand doesn't reset to 0. It didn't arrive set at zero, and the two times I've engaged the chronograph since I opened the box, the seconds hand has drifted further and further toward 5! Out of the box, the hand was at 58 seconds, so it's scooting around the dial.

I'm going to return it for a replacement, but I'm wondering, based on your experience, what my expectations should be. I think I've read about the chrono reset issue before. I'd like to feel like I could wear the watch every day to work and it would work fine, but now I'm wondering if it should be considered a novelty.

I've had a 1963 for a little over 2 years and have had no issues with mine. I wear it fairly regularly and enjoy it every time I do.

Good to know. The seller's gonna send me another, pre-paid return label for the defective one included. Looks even nicer in person.

Probably just the hand loose on the pinion

Glad to hear it, hope you get a better one next time. Whilst it's looks are quite distinctive, it's quite a versatile watch, works well on leather as well as a Nato

I'm sure it does. How's the accuracy?

It is one of their better looking models, IMO. I have a Seagull for one of my "whatever wearing" watches and have found the accuracy to be within +8 seconds a day if I have it one for a week at a time. Not bad for a $250 watch.

    Not bad at all.

I'd also thought about buying the D304, which is supposed to be built better, have better finishing than the 1963s. It's about double the cost, though, but it looks nearly exactly like the original Chinese air force watch from 1963. Quite attractive too.

    Not great, but tolerable
