More than most brands, Zodiac has embraced this new age of the GMT. A complication that in 2020 doesn’t mean what it did in almost any other year, it’s a watch genre that has proven to be extremely durable and desirable for fans in the enthusiast community. Because of the romance associated with travel (in 2020, for many of us, it’s outright fantasy), the GMT is particularly well suited to designs that are rooted in vintage character, and that’s really Zodiac’s sweet spot. After a series of popular, brightly colored GMT watches with multi-colored bezels that evoke classic Bakelite, Zodiac is back with a new version of the Super Seawolf GMT, the unexpected Blackout Edition.

The Super Seawolf GMT* Blackout Edition is a partnership with retailer Timeless Luxury Watches out of Dallas, TX. The new watch takes the same formula as previous Zodiac GMTs – namely a rotating 24 hour bezel and retro, dive watch styling – and gives it a sleek, blacked out look. The case and bracelet have both been given a black coating, and the dial is a gloss black as well. The light blue accent color on the bezel and handset cool the watch considerably and provide a nice contrast, while also keeping with the Zodiac tradition of utilizing lively colors that make one think of the glory days of 60s and 70s watch design, when funky colors were the rule, and not the exception.*
According to Timeless CEO Dan Broadfoot (who appeared on the Worn & Wound podcast at the beginning of 2020), the Blackout Edition was inspired by night diving. The blue colorway against the black backdrop is meant to have a glow, even when not illuminated by a diving torch.

As with other Super Seawolf GMTs, the Blackout Edition is powered by an ETA 2893-2 automatic movement, with an independently set 24 hour hand for “caller” GMT capabilities. While not ideal for world travelers, it’s a perfectly adequate GMT set up if you need to keep track of another time zone from your home base, and in this era of travel restrictions, that probably describes more people than it might have last year.*
Specs on the Blackout Edition line up with other Super Seawolf GMTs. It’s 40mm in diameter with 200 meters of water resistance and a screw down crown. The case has the same vintage inspired lines (just in black, now) and we’ve still got applied hour markers on the dial along with the iconic Zodiac typeface and logo. In addition the bracelet, the Blackout Edition ships with a black “Tropic” style rubber strap.*

Like other Super Seawolf GMTs, this one is very limited: only 82 will be made. Retail price on the Blackout Edition is $1,895. Head over to Timeless for more information. Zodiac
