Citizen Eco Drive Black Canvas Watch, Verdict: +1

Let me get this off my chest at the outset: Citizen, which makes design-inspired, solar-powered watches, could have done a lot better with the name it chose for this watch. It’s officially called the “Men’s Strap, Model: BM8475-00F.” The name gets a nudge upward to “Citizen Eco-Drive Black Canvas Watch” in online stores. But even this name doesn’t let you respond to “What’s that great-looking watch?” with something snappy like, “It’s a Citizen Night Stealth Solar.” (Citizen makes other black solar watches, including one named the “Stiletto Blade,” so it’s not as if they can’t think of names.)

But perhaps that’s what the designers at Citizen were going for with this watch. It looks stealthy. It looks like something that somebody would wear while on a secret mission. “No names, please.”

This Eco-Drive watch is also a great accessory if your regular garb tends toward black jeans and shirts. The Black Canvas happens to look terrific if you’re wearing white, too, because it boldly stands out from the rest of your outfit. Black goes with everything, right?

The Black Canvas is a medium-size watch, with a case that measures 42 mm in diameter and is 11 mm thick. The black canvas band gives the watch a rugged look. The white day and date display stands out, and I can see the gears in the watch designers’ minds spinning as they try to decide if having anything other than black adds or detracts to the design. I think it works: The white lettering draws in your eyes, which then move to take in the entire watch view. It’s like a small light in a vast dark cavern—a feel and look that works in movies and which is hard to replicate in watches.

Speaking of feels, I find the black canvas band a bit too stiff for my taste, but I hope that it will soften over time.

Don’t expect to be able to read the time with a quick glance. This is not the watch to wear to a meeting if you want to steal periodic looks at your wrist to see how much time is remaining until you’re set free. The black face, black numbers, and black minute and hour hands give your eyes and brain a little workout, just as you might have to focus your mind to see what’s in that cavern lit only by a small bulb.

Ironically, the Eco-Drive Black Canvas is sometimes easier to read in the dark than on a sunny day, thanks to the luminous hands and numbers. The luminosity isn’t that powerful, though—likely a deliberate design decision to keep the hands and numbers from appearing anything but black in daylight.

Knowing that it’s solar powered, that it won’t ever wink out when you need it most—like when you’re on that secret mission or just want to know how long until the next bus arrives—makes the Citizen Black Canvas a reliable watch in all places. I like that free-from-battery-woes aspect of Citizen’s Eco-Drive line. Like other quartz watches, it keeps adequately accurate time. If you’re going to get a quartz watch, solar powered is the way to go if you don’t want to pay regular visits to the store for a battery

The case is stainless steel; the crystal is mineral glass. It’s water resistant to 100 m, which means that I don’t have to worry about the watch if the weather forecast of sun and blue skies is less than accurate. The Black Canvas was manufactured in 2011. Citizen suggests a retail price of $175, but you can definitely buy it for at least $40 less online.

The Eco-Drive Black Canvas isn’t a horological marvel, but it is a lot of fun to wear.

I'll be posting this article on my watch blog, A Better Wrist, in the near future, but I'm publishing it on IWL first.

is there a version with better contrast? like white hands on black dial with the exact same design?
my poor sight would have difficuties for quick glance... as cool as stealth trend in some watches.. i personaly find them less practical in low light..

    Thanks for sharing Bill!

i love Citizen but this is only useful if one needed to know the day and date - other than that chocolate fireguard comes to mind -

I'm not a fan of black case watches, but I actually kinda dig this one. Thanks, Bill.

I like solar watches; it's a very sensible, interesting and trouble free approach. We have a few (Eco-Drive, Seiko and G-Shock). Taking the emotion out, it's probably the best way to power a watch.
    G-Shock: GW3000B-1A
    Rolex: Submariner 14060M
Accurist: 1961 Shockmaster (Gold) & 1965 Shockmaster (Steel)
    Omega: Speedmaster Professional 3570.50.00
    Meistersinger: Perigraph AM1002
    Ben Sherman: S489.OOBS
    Rotary: 1990 Quartz (Gold)
    Steinhart: Ocean GMT 39mm
    Certina: DS Super PH500M & DS PH200M
    Timex: MKI Mechanical

Does the watch have a dial? Everything is too dark to tell..........

I really like the idea of stealth watches because they're kind of illogical. Visually I think I like the stealth version most of all the variants posted, but I wish they'd done a stealth day/date too
