We went to Auschwitz on our 10th anniversary, although that was a coincidence…

A less romantic place to celebrate an anniversary is hard to imagine.

The restaurant in the evening was a bit more appropriate -
Wierzynek, with origins that go back to 1364, when Mikolai Wierzynek hosted a feast for the wedding of King Casimir the Great's granddaughter to the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV.
We were at a table by the window, overlooking Kraków’s Market Square, deep in snow. Back in 1996, you could feast like a king in Kraków for the price of an ordinary meal back home.

For my first marriage, we honeymooned in Madrid and Barcelona for a bit then met my in-laws in Vienna and journeyed behind the Iron Curtain (still extant then) to Auschwitz and Treblinka. I always said that the subsequent demise of our marriage could have been predicted because I spent part of my honeymoon at Auschwitz with my mother-in-law.
Marriage stories aside, no place on this planet has affected me like Auschwitz.

Auschwitz was harrowing for sure, but what really struck me was the absurd scale of Birkenau camp.

Indeed. Auschwitz was a repurposed barracks. Birkenau was industrial…

Congratulations @Henrykrinkle. I thought I was doing well at 28 years.
Once in awhile you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
