    Renaissance Festival

So it's been a few years since I squeezed into my wench clothes and the wench might be a bit more buxom now, but I'm thinking about wheedling my husband into a day of jousting and juggling and belly dancers and falconry at this year's Ren Faire:

Even if you don't wear a codpiece it's a fun way to while away an Indian Summer Day in our little corner of the world (photos courtesy of Carolina Renaissance Festival and used with permission):

Not that this is exactly important, but how did something about enjoying earthy mediaeval things end up being called renaissance? Does "mediaeval" have negative connotations in the US?

I have no idea, but they're pretty flexible in terms of chronology and geography.

Maybe it's more of an an old English festival... I mean, wasn't England still in the dark ages while Brunelleschi was designing the dome of Florence? (And I duck behind a table to avoid the flying flagons of mead tossed in my direction.)
Too many watches, not enough wrists.

In defence of the English at this time: we invented what gets called Renaissance music (IMO the music that is actually related to artistic aims of The Renaissance was the Seconda Prattica of Monteverdi etc but nevermind) - that seamless style of Dunstable etc was called La Consonance Angloise (?sp) by the French and the basic rules held for the next half millennium (no parallel fifths, no parallel octaves, no second inversions, no unprepared dissonance) And in architecture I don't think anyone is *complaining* about our preoccupation with the thoroughly mediaeval Perpendicular style. Our Dark Ages did have a lot of light in them

Went the the PA Renn Fair twice as a schoolchild, both on field trips. Had a great time. Never got into the talking funny and dressing funny thing, though. I was never good at dressing up for Halloween, either.

I'd like to go again, but the timing always sucks for me.
