Thread: When your strap costs more than the watch it's on

  1. #21
I think if you see a strap and think that would look nice on your watch, why should the budget then change your mind ?

Why should the cost of the strap be relative to the cost of the watch ?

A strap can really change the look of a watch and personally I would not be swayed by price.

Flip this on it's head, should an expensive watch have a cheap strap on it, for example, current trend is for NATO or Perlon straps, under £10, on £4000+ Rolex watches, in my opinion these look great and fit with the watch.

A strap costing more than a watch? I'd have to buy watches that were £25 and under...

I've just sold the watch but I still have the strap...

An ABP aligator NATO on a Seiko FFF

The other is my wife's Louis Erard on a calf strap from ABP.

    Totally go for it!
This is super easy to do in my watch price range (old Russians often about £30) and initially I balked at over £20 on a strap
But, it can take your watch into another league
Everything you've heard about cordovan/ horween/ Juchten is true

That's a C&B strap, which cost perhaps half again what the watch cost.

But this photo doesn't tell the whole story. At the risk of seeming really eccentric...

I bought a black Super Engineer II for this watch. Yes, I did. Unfortunately, the lugs aren't long enough for a SE2, so this watch isn't as bad-kitteh as I intended.

    But wait, it gets worse...

I also bought a titanium Seiko quartz watch, because the Hello Kitty watch has a movement that is supposed to be a drop-in replacement for a Seiko movement and I thought I'd be able to put the HK watch guts and dial into the Seiko, and have a nice case. The movement fits but the stem doesn't.

    And worse...

My current plan is to put this dial in a Seiko automatic, and hopefully I'll be able to use the Super Engineer.

It's so wrong how much I want that dial. In a pre-war cushion case on a dusty sky blue perlon.
