Are there other lenses of that focal range for that camera body that are known to be "better/sharper" lenses? A lens that opens to f/2.8 would have let in roughly twice the light vs f/4.5 and would allow an ISO twice as low.

As well, if you have any filters that will decrease the light, it might be worth shedding them in 'this' situation. I typically keep a PL on my telephoto lens and that will soak up light if I do not remove it first.
No filters on this.
