I drove a manual for the first time in a long time, because the garage didn’t have an auto loan car.
My goodness, what a pain. it’s driving, but driving interrupted. I hadn’t driven a six-speed manual before either. That’s annoying plus one. If I tried to ignore 6th, and this was on country roads at 50mph, a message came up inviting me to consider a higher gear.
I know why people enjoy manuals, but it was like going back to the days when you had to walk over to the TV to change channels. 3rd and 4th can be nice gears, but I don’t rate the others.

I’m with you on this. My current is my first automatic, and I don’t see going back. But I’m not a sports car type either.

You’ve never driven a 6 speed before? That’s so weird, all my manual cars have been 6 speeds. I’ve driven 5 speeds before, but never owned one.
Personally, I hate everything about driving an automatic, but that’s well known. I even think cars are uglier when they have an automatic.

My first Audi (98 A4) was a 5 spd.

I grew up on 4-speed gearboxes. I can’t remember exactly, but I don’t think 5-speed boxes came along until I was in my thirties. For a while, I had an Audi 100 automatic that had just three ratios.
I don’t know if there were six-speed gearboxes before I switched to autos, but I never had one. When I first learnt of them, I didn’t know how people could tolerate six gears. It didn’t seem like progress. Driving one yesterday, i thought: ‘This is crazy - there’s too much to do’. I was working for the car, when it should have been working for me. It was a relief to hand it back and come home in my own car.

I know a lot of people feel that way, but it’s so fundamentally different from how I feel about it, it’s impossible for me to identify with it.

I very nearly got a WRX, which would have been a 5 speed, but it didn’t work out.
