Too big / Too small - which looks worse?

I'd weigh in with 'too big'..but I'd probably risk bigger rather than smaller..7 inch wrist limits me otherwise?

Too big. At least too small is still on your wrist rather than half off it.

Error to the smaller side, too big looks like "Dad's" watch.

I don't know. Taken to extremes they both look funny. I think it is probably better to err on the side of slightly too small. On the other hand (pun intended), I tend to have gone with too big of a watch at times. Proper sleeves and shirt cuffs can cover a multitude of sins.

To big often looks silly, to small gets overlooked.

Sorry, but I can't choose. Both have the potential to look wrong...

It's impossible to apply a single parameter to take definitive conclusions, because the large/small perception depends on the size and shape of your wrist; the watch lug to lug distance; case shape, bezel and dial size. Even the color of the dial has to be taken into consideration. So, I'm afraid I don't have an easy answer.

Once in awhile you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
