Have we seen the last of the 'iconic' watches?

    Submariner, Monaco, Speedy etc.

Is there any possibility we will see the like again?

Is there any room to make enough of a change to a wristwatch to set a new bar?

Is the next step smart watches? Where will that leave the current brands?

Depends on your viewpoint, I was not (am not, will never be**) enamoured by any of the one's you quote, but for me this Ressence Type1 sets a new bar/benchmark:

** sorry it's just my view.

There is the potential for this to get side tracked by what's 'iconic' hence the etc. I use the term very loosely

It might have been the Type 3 I meant to post.

It's just that type 1 pic was in my collection here, 1st one I came to.

Both,.... and the company are worthy contenders in my book.

I think the answer is yes, a watch needs not to be revolutionary to be iconic. To me it's all a out the aesthetics. So as hard as it is to predict, there will be a design that stands the test of time coming out some time soon. I doubt it will be a smart watch as they become out dated within months of their release.

Next likely iconic watch is the IWatch from Apple.

Movado's museum line is iconic to many outside of the forum world....possibly a more modern iconic entry than the watches mentioned in the OP

It will happen again at some point. It will take somebody doing something different, doing it well, and sticking to it. It may also happen if something is involved in a big event (like a moon landing). First watch on Mars potentially?

It may also be the result of new materials.....first cuff-friendly 1000M watch or something similar

There is no expiration on iconic design, it is merely a pop explosion waiting to happen

Ressense is very interesting. Though I was blown away the first time I saw one and looked up the price!

Unfortunately given my love of autos, enjoyment of apple products notwithstanding, the apple watch will in all likelihood be the next iconic watch design.

All that said, here is one modern day piece I believe has/will have iconic status.

I think there's a few candidates out there for future "icons". Some which spring to mind are:

    The Tudor Black Bay

    Omega 15000 Gauss

    GS Snowflake

    Especially the 1st one...
    G-Shock: GW3000B-1A
    Rolex: Submariner 14060M
Accurist: 1961 Shockmaster (Gold) & 1965 Shockmaster (Steel)
    Omega: Speedmaster Professional 3570.50.00
    Meistersinger: Perigraph AM1002
    Ben Sherman: S489.OOBS
    Rotary: 1990 Quartz (Gold)
    Steinhart: Ocean GMT 39mm
    Certina: DS Super PH500M & DS PH200M
    Timex: MKI Mechanical
