William Gibson: 'Mechanical watches are so brilliantly unnecessary'

I've just read his Wired article 'My Obsession' about ebay and collecting watches, in the collection Distrust that Particular Flavor
    http://archive.wired.com/wired/archive/7.01/ebay.html?pg=1&topic=&topic_set=
He has interesting things to say about the process of falling in love with watches, the joy of unearthing an area of knowledge, tracking down an elusive 'one.'
He now owns 'less watches than fingers'
I've enjoyed his books very much over the years, never knew he was one of us :-)

Very cool! I have enjoyed his books as well and am somewhat surprised that he is one of us, as well. Although when I actually think about it, there is some logic to his connection to watches and an underlying desire to know and explain how things work.

No, rf, it's from the Jan 1999 issue :-)
The collection of his essays I read it in came out in 2012. Just found it the other day in a local bookshop

It's from 1999 by the look of it.

I think "less watches than fingers" is probably something I should aspire to

I've 10 in my wearing collection, but, a bit Dennis Nilsen-like, I've a few others tucked away here and there

The Wikipedia article on him has this weird surreal dreamlike quality. The narrative gently flows by, the grim nature of the facts weirdly hidden from view

Interesting article, OhDark30. Thank you for posting it. I wonder if Mr. Gibson knows about IWL!
